Philippine candidate Chelsea Anne Manalo made history at the 73rd Miss Universe pageant, earning the first-ever Miss Universe Asia 2024 title despite falling short of the semifinals.

In a press conference following the event, Manalo was recognized alongside the other continental titleholders: Finland’s Matilda Wirtavuori (Miss Universe Europe and the Middle East), Peru’s Tatiana Calmell (Miss Universe Americas), and Nigeria’s Chidimma Adetshina (Miss Universe Africa and Oceania).

These continental queens will serve as ambassadors for their respective regions, a role similar to that of the reigning Miss Universe.

Denmark’s Victoria Kjaer Theilvig was crowned Miss Universe 2024, defeating 124 other candidates in a three-hour competition held on Sunday in Mexico. Theilvig is the first to wear the “Light of Infinity” crown, designed by Filipino brand Jewelmer.

Although Manalo didn’t make the semifinals, her Top 30 finish marks the Philippines’ second straight year in the Miss Universe first cut. Last year, Michelle Dee reached the Top 10.

While her pageant journey is remarkable, Manalo’s influence reaches far beyond the stage. Manalo, the first Filipino-Black American to win the Miss Universe Philippines title, is known for her advocacy for indigenous communities and youth empowerment.

As Miss Universe Asia 2024, she now has an even greater opportunity to amplify these causes on a regional scale, inspiring change and driving awareness.
