Holy Rosary Parish Church—known to locals as Pisamban Maragul (Big Church)—has been named a minor basilica, a rare honor that binds a provincial parish to Rome.
The elevation, granted by Pope Leo XIV through a January 21, 2026 decree from the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, makes Holy Rosary the first minor basilica in the Archdiocese of San Fernando.

The decree was received at the Apostolic Nunciature in Manila by parish priest Fr. Manuel Sta. Maria and fellow clergy, marking the culmination of a petition submitted last year by Archbishop Florentino Lavarias. The archbishop cited the parish’s strong liturgical life and enduring Marian devotion—a faith tradition that has survived colonial upheavals, volcanic eruptions, and the transformations of a former American air base town.
In a statement, the parish announced: “With great joy and profound thanksgiving, we announce that the Holy See, through the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, has granted the Decree of Elevation to the rank of Minor Basilica to Holy Rosary Parish (Pisamban Maragul), Angeles City, Pampanga.”
For Fr. Sta. Maria, the title reflects something older than the decree itself. “This honor given to us is not only a testament to the Angeleños’ devotion to the Blessed Mother, but the Kapampangan’s faith as well,” he said.
The timing deepens the symbolism. This year marks the 380th anniversary of the Battle of La Naval, a naval victory long attributed by Filipino Catholics to the intercession of the Virgin Mary. It is also the 230th anniversary of the founding of Barrio Culiat—the settlement that would become Angeles City—and the 140th anniversary of the first Mass celebrated in Pisamban Maragul.

According to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), a minor basilica is granted special status by the pope in recognition of historical significance and vibrant liturgical life. Such churches may display papal symbols—the crossed keys and the conopaeum (ceremonial umbrella)—and are expected to model exemplary worship.
Local historians note that Holy Rosary is now the first minor basilica in Pampanga, the 30th in the Philippines, and one of about 2,000 worldwide. Yet for the faithful who gather beneath its vaulted ceiling, the distinction is less about numbers than continuity—a reminder that even in a rapidly changing city, devotion endures.
The date for the solemn declaration rite will be held on June 10, 2026.
In a social media post, the church said: “On that blessed day, we shall gather as one community of faith to mark this milestone in the life of our parish and of the whole Archdiocese of San Fernando. We are invited to unite in fervent prayer and heartfelt thanksgiving to Almighty God, whose gracious providence has brought us to this hour. Santo Anghel, antabayanan Mu kami! Indu at Reiña ning Santo Rosario, La Naval de Angeles, ipanalangin Mu kami! Apung Mamacalulu, pakaluluan Mu kami!”
