Local sportsbook ArenaPlus has secured a pivotal position in the Philippines’ fast-growing sports betting market after becoming the first official betting partner of the National Basketball Association (NBA) in the country, a multiyear deal that reflects both basketball’s entrenched popularity and the increasing commercial role of digital wagering platforms across Southeast Asia.
The agreement enables ArenaPlus to integrate NBA branding across its digital ecosystem while activating localized campaigns designed to drive fan engagement. The partnership launch also served as a major promotional event, headlined by former NBA most valuable player Derrick Rose and supported by a roster of Filipino personalities including Luis Manzano, Jessy Mendiola, Ellen Adarna, alongside basketball figures Thirdy Ravena and Bong Ravena, and volleyball player Dani Ravena.
The partnership comes as the Philippine sportsbook segment remains underpenetrated despite strong sports viewership. Speaking to SiGMA News, ArenaPlus head Erick Su characterized the market as still emerging, citing internal data indicating that a majority of users are relatively new to sports betting and overall participation remains limited.
“I think the sportsbook market is still quite new in the Philippines,” Su said. “From what we see, around 60% of players have only started engaging with sports betting in the last 12 months. At the same time, only about 10% of the adult population (21 and above) is currently involved in sports betting.”
The data points to a gap between sports fandom and wagering activity, suggesting room for expansion as platforms refine their offerings. ArenaPlus projects annual growth of 20% to 30% over the next five years, driven by product development and deeper user engagement.
A key component of that strategy is the introduction of interactive features such as micro-betting, which allows users to place wagers on discrete in-game events. Su said this format is designed to increase engagement by aligning betting activity with the real-time flow of matches.
“Sportsbooks can offer a level of engagement that traditional or even social media cannot,” he said, adding that such features allow fans to participate more actively rather than passively consume content.
ArenaPlus is also prioritizing localization, focusing on aligning its platform with Filipino user behavior and preferences rather than emphasizing short-term performance metrics. The approach is intended to strengthen retention and broaden participation over time, particularly in a basketball-driven market.
On regulatory developments, Su indicated that the Philippines is taking an adaptive approach as the sector evolves. He noted that prediction markets—while long established globally—are being reshaped by technology and data availability, requiring clear oversight frameworks in emerging markets.
“For a developing market like the Philippines, I think it’s important that any prediction market be properly regulated,” Su said.
He added in the same interview that ArenaPlus is working with regulators to support policy development, emphasizing data sharing and compliance as the industry matures. The company operates under DigiPlus Interactive Corporation, which continues to expand its digital gaming portfolio in the country.
The NBA partnership formalizes a commercial arrangement that includes brand integration, promotional campaigns, and fan-facing activations. It also situates ArenaPlus within a segment where international sports properties are increasingly collaborating with regional betting operators as part of broader audience engagement and monetization strategies.
