Marcos signs P6.326 trillion budget, prioritizes education
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. signed the P6.326 trillion national budget for 2025 into law on Monday, Dec. 30, with the education sector receiving the largest share of P1.05 trillion.
Other major allocations include P1.007 trillion for the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), P315.1 billion for the Department of National Defense (DND), P279.1 billion for the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), and P267.8 billion for the Department of Health (DOH).
The Department of Agriculture is allocated P237.4 billion, while the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will receive P217.5 billion. Smaller allocations include P123.7 billion for the Department of Transportation (DOTr), P64 billion for the judiciary, and P42.2 billion for the Department of Justice (DOJ).
In a speech, Marcos emphasized that the budget prioritizes education and social services, aligning with his administration’s goals. He also announced the veto of P194 billion worth of projects, which he deemed “inconsistent with the administration’s programmed priorities.”
Notably, Marcos vetoed P26.06 billion in DPWH projects, citing their lack of alignment with the government’s infrastructure program. He explained that these programs were assessed based on their urgency, readiness for implementation, and the capacity of the agencies involved.
The vetoes also extended to certain “unprogrammed appropriations,” which are meant to ensure expenditures remain within the parameters set by fiscal planners.
