New musical ‘Bongga Ka, ’Day!’ set for September run at Newport

The curtain may have fallen on Bagets: The Musical, but Newport World Resorts is already setting the stage for its next spectacle—one that promises a vibrant return to the glittering pulse of Manila’s disco era.

On March 22, 2026, during the final bow of the crowd-favorite production at the Newport Performing Arts Theater, audiences were treated to more than a farewell. In a seamless handover, the cast unveiled a teaser of the upcoming Bongga Ka, ’Day!: The Annie Batungbakal Musical, offering a lively preview that felt both nostalgic and refreshingly new.

The moment unfolded with intention. As Bagets closed its 36-show run—a production that followed the lives of the Class of ’85 and earned a warm reception from theatergoers—the energy in the room shifted rather than settled. The finale transitioned into a different decade, trading varsity jackets for disco lights, evoking the unmistakable rhythm of 1970s Manila nightlife.

The cast launched into a mashup of Hotdog classics, including “Bongga Ka Day” and “Manila,” instantly transporting the audience into the era that defined the Manila Sound. The performance then flowed into “Annie Batungbakal,” the iconic track that tells the story of a working-class woman from Frisco (San Francisco del Monte) who transforms into a dazzling disco queen by night. It was a fitting introduction—both a tribute and a promise—of what’s to come.

The teaser wasn’t just a musical number; it was a tonal shift. Where Bagets thrived on youthful nostalgia, Bongga Ka, ’Day! hints at a more layered narrative—one rooted in identity, aspiration, and transformation, all wrapped in the glitter of a defining cultural moment.

Following the performance, Newport World Resorts president and chief executive Nilo Rodriguez formally confirmed the production as the company’s next major theatrical offering. The musical is set to open in September, although details—including the actress who will take on the titular role of Annie Batungbakal—remain under wraps.

“Thank you for celebrating with us as we close the curtain on this ’80s party onstage. Bagets: The Musical is the latest chapter in what we have been building here: a stronger platform for live theater, powered by Filipino talent. Over the past year, this theater has welcomed different stories and different audiences, with one clear outcome: live performance grows when people choose to build it together,” Rodriguez said.

The upcoming production continues Newport World Resorts’ collaboration with Viva Communications, The Philippine STAR, and PETA Plus—partners that have been instrumental in shaping a slate of musicals grounded in original Filipino stories and sound.

If Bagets captured the innocence and chaos of youth, Bongga Ka, ’Day! appears poised to explore reinvention—how ordinary lives take on extraordinary color under the right spotlight. Anchored in the music of Hotdog, a band synonymous with the Manila Sound movement, the musical is expected to tap into a rich cultural archive while reintroducing it to a new generation.

More than just a follow-up, the announcement signals a growing confidence in local theater as both an artistic and commercial force. The seamless transition from one production to the next reflects a broader vision: a continuous, evolving stage where Filipino narratives are not just revisited, but reimagined.

As the lights dimmed on Bagets, they rose almost instantly on something else—bolder, brighter, and unmistakably “bongga.”
