Philippine Airlines (PAL) is set to become the newest member of the Oneworld Alliance after receiving an invitation to join the global airline group, marking a major milestone for the country’s flag carrier as it celebrates its 85th year and pursues further international growth.
The announcement was made during the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting on June 6 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, positioning PAL to become the alliance’s 16th member airline and only the second full member carrier based in Southeast Asia. The move significantly expands the airline’s global reach and strengthens the Philippines’ role in international aviation.
Once integrated into the alliance, PAL customers will gain access to a worldwide network serving nearly 1,000 destinations across more than 170 countries and territories through some of the industry’s leading airlines. The development also enhances Oneworld’s presence in Southeast Asia by adding PAL’s extensive domestic and regional network, creating new connections to destinations throughout the Philippines.
The planned membership is expected to generate broader commercial opportunities for the airline through increased passenger traffic, stronger international connectivity, and enhanced loyalty benefits. It also elevates PAL’s standing among the world’s major carriers while providing customers with a more seamless travel experience across multiple airline partners.

American Airlines chief executive Robert Isom, who also serves as chairman of the Oneworld governing board, said PAL’s addition aligns with the alliance’s long-term growth strategy in the Asia-Pacific region.
“Philippine Airlines’ entry into Oneworld supports our long-term strategic growth and strengthens our connectivity across key markets in the Asia-Pacific region,” Isom said. “The airline has a proud heritage and will serve a critical role in our Southeast Asia network.”
Oneworld Alliance chief executive Ole Orvér said PAL’s reputation for service and innovation made it a strong fit for the alliance’s premium travel offering.
“Philippine Airlines is a globally respected carrier with a strong commitment to innovation and customer service that aligns with Oneworld’s reputation for delivering a premium experience across the travel journey,” Orvér said. “This decision is an endorsement of Oneworld, and its global customer offering. We look forward to welcoming Philippine Airlines into the alliance.”
For travelers, PAL’s future membership will provide access to a more integrated global network, allowing smoother connections between flights, coordinated schedules and expanded travel options across multiple continents. Customers will also benefit from reciprocal privileges available throughout the alliance.
Members of PAL’s Mabuhay Miles loyalty program will be able to earn and redeem miles across all Oneworld member airlines. The airline’s elite customers will gain access to Oneworld priority benefits, including expedited airport services and entry to more than 700 premium airport lounges worldwide. Eligible travelers will also enjoy access to first class lounges and dedicated first class check-in facilities at participating airports.
Founded in 1941, Philippine Airlines is the country’s oldest commercial airline and has played a central role in connecting the Philippines with destinations across Asia, North America, Oceania, and the Middle East. Its entry into Oneworld represents one of the most significant developments in the airline’s modern history, further integrating the carrier into the global aviation network.
The Oneworld Alliance currently includes Alaska Airlines / Hawaiian Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Fiji Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Oman Air, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian, and SriLankan Airlines.
