Mazda didn’t just win the 2025 Petron Makabayan Cup season—it owned it.
In a breakthrough campaign years in the making, the #55 Team MSCC Mazda Miata became the first brand to sweep all three legs of the Makabayan Cup, conquering the Kagitingan, Kalayaan, and Bonifacio endurance races in a single season.
The achievement rewrites the history books of Philippine endurance racing and cements the MX-5’s reputation as one of the most balanced race platforms on the grid.
Considered the country’s most punishing endurance series, the Makabayan Cup is a true test of mechanical resilience and driver consistency. Its three rounds—the 4-hour Kagitingan Cup, the 12-hour Kalayaan Cup, and the 8-hour Bonifacio Cup—are staged at either Clark International Speedway or Batangas Racing Circuit, with each race honoring a historically significant date. Survive one leg and you’ve earned respect. Sweep all three, and you’ve made history.
It took seven years to get there.
Mazda’s Makabayan journey began modestly in 2017 with a single one-off appearance. By 2019, the program had evolved into a full-fledged campaign, marking the steady transformation of the MX-5 from enthusiast track weapon to endurance racing contender. Each season brought calculated refinements.
In 2022, car #55 debuted the striking “Imagine” livery. Two years later, it underwent a dramatic full carbon-fiber body conversion. For 2025, the car reached what many consider its ultimate specification with the addition of a quick-shifting sequential gearbox—a crucial upgrade for endurance consistency.
Yet through all the aerodynamic tweaks and drivetrain upgrades, the heart of the car never changed.
The 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engine remained completely stock, producing 184 PS and 205 Nm. On paper, that left the MX-5 down on outright power against more purpose-built race machines. On track, it didn’t matter. By leaning into Mazda’s core philosophy—lightweight construction, precise handling, and mechanical balance—the #55 Miata consistently outpaced stronger rivals over the long haul.
Performance backed up the narrative. Alongside the season sweep, Team MSCC Mazda Miata reset lap records across all three legs, highlighted by a blistering 2:06.6 around the 4.189-kilometer Clark International Speedway—a statement lap in a series defined by endurance rather than outright speed.
“The 2025 MSCC Miata Endurance Race Series marks a historic milestone for Mazda Philippines,” says Steven Tan, president of Mazda Philippines. “Our success this year isn’t just about winning a season. It is a culmination of seven years of commitment, refinement, and belief in the MX-5 platform.”
Behind the milestone season is a deep bench of support and driving talent. Backed by Mazda Philippines, the program is led by team head Edgen Dy-Liacco. The driver lineup features seasoned racers Angie King, Windy Imperial, Tyson Sy, Juha Turalba, Matt Solomon, and Milo Rivera—a rotation built not just for speed, but for stamina. Together, they completed a seven-year evolution that culminated in a clean sweep of the 2025 season, sealing Mazda’s place in Philippine endurance racing history.
